Why This Matters:
Over 65,000 Puerto Ricans served in WWII, fighting in iconic battles like D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. They served in the 65th Infantry Regiment (which would later become the Borinqueneers), as nurses, pilots, engineers, and in every branch of the military. They fought for freedom even though Puerto Rico was not yet granted full citizenship rights. Their sacrifice helped defeat fascism and secure liberty for the world.
